spring is coming …

Unfortunately it’s still cold, but so many things are peeking out of the ground or
showing buds that spring is finally making itself felt in the north.
And tonight’s full moon will hopefully herald warmer times.
But actually I have to be glad that the garden isn’t calling so urgently yet,
because I’m in the final spurt for BuchDruckKunst Hamburg, which will take place
on 5 – 7 April at the »Museum der Arbeit«, and as always there will be a lot of top-class art
to see (and to buy!).
I’m really looking forward to the exchange with my wonderful colleagues –
and I’ll bring some new works with me.

It’s my first exhibition date in 2024,
please find me under blauvogelbuch

4 to 7 April 2024
BuchDruckKunst – exquisite works on paper
at the »Museum der Arbeit«, Wiesendamm 3, Hamburg
(Barmbek underground/subway station)

Opening on Friday, 4 March, from 5 – 9 pm

Otherwise there are still
to see a few photos from my studio etc. from time to time:
https://www.instagram.com/mmaehrle/

And »save the date«: The »9th Biennale Buchkunst Weimar«
will take place on 7 + 8 December 2024 in the seminar building
of the Congresscentrum Neue Weimarhalle, Unesco-Platz 1, Weimar.

This will be my last exhibition date in 2024.
Further events (between April and December) have not yet all been decided.

last days of summer . . . .

Now the street lights are coming on again here in the north. They remain switched off in our village from June to the end of August, as it is light for so long and it is not worth switching them on before 11 pm (after this time we are a star park all year round).
As it happens very quickly that the nights get cold and it gets dark earlier than in the south,
every sunny day is a gift.
Then I look forward to concentrated work in my studio under the roof,
wind and rain (outside!) are companions to the peace and quiet of the autumn and winter retreat.

My last exhibition date in 2023,
please find me under blauvogelbuch

20 to 22 October 2023
artbook berlin,
which normally takes place on the third weekend in November,
was exceptionally postponed to October this year.
As always, the exhibition venue is Kunstquartier Bethanien

a new year – at last . . .

&
my
second
small
work-
catalogue!

I still have the cancellations of the last three years in my head,
but hope is rising that things will finally return to normal.
The »artbook berlin« in November 2022 was my first event without compulsory masks since 2019 – and BEAUTIFUL it was!
2021 – for the 8th Biennale of BuchKunst Weimar I was able to publish the small edition of the first catalogue booklet of my work –
or rather an atmospheric picture book …. :
»SAILING THE ART / CRAFT DIVIDE«.
In 2022 my picture book »SUN PRINTS« followed in the same format,
and is, like the postcards, available in my webshop at
wabi-sabi-works
but above all at my stand at exhibitions and fairs –
which can now take place (almost) “normally” again.
The reunion after the two years break at the Homburg Summer Academy in summer 2022
was a great pleasure, and there will be this lovely opportunity for exchange + experimentation again next summer.

My first exhibition dates in 2023:
please find me at blauvogelbuch

31 March – 2 April 2023

18 – 21 May 2023
The International Book Fair for Small Publishers and Artists’ Books
(Mainzer Minipressen-Messe)
which normally takes place every other (odd) year,
also fell victim to Corona in 2021. Now finally again,
on the traditional date from Ascension Day to Sunday: 18 to 21 May 2023
at the Rheingoldhalle, Mainz

Apart from that, there are a few photos from my studio etc. to be seen here from time to time:

. . . and now it’s autumn again

At least there is a bit of news since the unpredictable beginning of the year, and that is quite positive – the BuchDruckKunst Hamburg at the beginning of April was already “almost normal”
(if one disregards the mask obligation) and again a very beautiful, high-quality and well-attended exhibition.
The best thing of all was that the Homburg Summer Academy could finally take place again this summer after the two-year forced break. Moreover, we got through without a single corona case, truly a reason to celebrate.
Painfully missed was the Mainzer Minipressen-Messe, which took place for the last time in 2019 – and just as we were fobbed off with a sudden cancellation after registering this year, I am curious whether there will be an MMPM in 2023 (or ever again).

Now I am looking forward to artbook berlin,
a welcome motivation to dedicate this autumn to new one-of-a-kind books –
and to take a little break from cyanotype.

Not having reached a “normal” state of work and social contacts,
I am still posting fotos of my work & studio etc. from time to time:

still not much news . . .

new:
my first
little
work
catalogue!

Cautiously, I am trying to plan the first dates for this year
and not to think about all the cancellations of the last two years.
According to my postcards, I was able to finish at the end of 2021 –
just in time for the 8th Biennale of BuchKunst Weimar
a small edition of the first catalogue booklet of my work – or rather
an atmospheric picture book: »Sailing the Art / Craft Divide«.

For the time being, like the postcards, it is available in my webshop:
wabi-sabi-works
but above all at my stand at exhibitions and fairs –
as far as that will be possible again.

For BuchDruckKunst Hamburg, whose special theme this year is alternative photographic techniques, I am currently preparing another small catalogue about Cyanotype.

news from the world of thawing snow …

new:
my
postcards!

In the tightness of the lockdown I have now finally fulfilled
a long cherished desire: own postcards!
Which you can currently see in my webshop:
wabi-sabi-works
but then mainly at my booth at exhibitions and fairs –
as soon as that is possible again.
There is also a small catalog of my work in the planning.

At the moment, probably my first exhibition date in 2021:

instagram account, there are still a few photos from my studio etc. to be seen from time to time:

new year, new luck…?

Absolutely unexpectedly, I can now start with the last sentence of my post from the end of October: “Now I wish everyone good nerves and health for the coming months …” – because, not only my, hopes for an early return to normal working life have unfortunately not yet been fulfilled.
Despite keeping my fingers crossed, the BuchDruckKunst Hamburg has now been hit again this year, the date of March 12 – 14 is unfortunately, no longer to be held in this still imponderable Corona situation. Fortunately, however, it is not a cancellation this time, but the fair will be postponed, to September 24 – 26, 2021.

…and now
please
summer
forever!

Oh, almost forgot: I reluctantly created an Instagram account at the end of October, after the Frankfurt Book Fair which failed to take place for the first time in my life. I had intended to only give it a try until the end of 2020, but now want to continue with it during the lockdown after all….

winter is coming . . .

When in spring 2020 suddenly all my appointments fell victim to the pandemic,
I intended to use this unplanned »free time« for undisturbed work in the studio.
However, flow and peace of mind were missing – not only due to the daily news (and lack of earning opportunities), but also due to the uncertain perspective of when it might be possible to organize unbiased exhibitions and workshops again. A colleague wrote: “I got virtually nothing going in the studio, it was like a lapse, after any prospect of being able to »show« became superfluous”.
Being outside a lot and working in the garden was then very helpful – and above all, exposing new cyanotypes in the sun again and again! This fascination will certainly not end with the completion of my new book »BLAUE WUNDER«, which was published in September.
Which I’m very happy about, even if I couldn’t celebrate it at the Frankfurt Book Fair (cancelled) at the Haupt Verlag booth as usual (have a »look inside« the book under Publications).

Now I wish everyone good nerves and health for the coming months, and maybe I’ll even manage to have some brand new works in the store by Christmas, we’ll see…

…and now
go well
through the
dark season!

…also if it works out this time?
Please keep your fingers crossed!

a new book on the horizon in the new year . . .

Not quite into the new year (decade!) yet, I’m still quite engrossed in working on my
new (4th) how-to book with a September 2020 release date.
As soon as the title and cover are finalized, it will be available here on the website under »Publications«.
In March I will have the pleasure to meet my colleagues again at the »BuchDruckKunst» in Hamburg and see their new works. (Unfortunately not – the event was cancelled on March 12).
In May I will be teaching for the first time at the Bosener Mühle Cultural Center in Saarland,
and in August I will be back at the Homburg Summer Academy (see »Workshops«).
(Also these two events had to be cancelled now with a heavy heart…)

…my new
book will be
published
in September!

Spring 2019

TIME FLIES …!  Winter’s almost over, the days are getting longer,
and I have lots of ideas and plans for the not-so-new-anymore year – including a very special highlight:
I’m embarking on another book project (for Haupt Verlag publishers, of course);
the pub date is set for the fall of 2020.
Entirely refreshed and highly inspired I returned from a trip to Japan this past October,
a trip that had – nine years after my stay there as an artist in residence – long been overdue.
Now I’m looking forward to delving into new adventures involving paper and books!
I’ll be teaching another summer course at Sommerakademie Homburg,
and after a one-year hiatus I’ll also be exhibiting again at Mainzer Minipressen-Messe, the international fair for small publishers and book artists.

…and again
there’s
a new book
in sight!
